Fluoride is returning to the Poynette water system.

The Village Board voted this week to put fluoride back in the water supply, reversing a decision made last month before newly elected members took their seats on the board.

The previous board had stopped putting fluoride in the water last July and decided to continue that policy despite results of an advisory referendum in April. The vote showed most residents supported the addition of the chemical compound.

Dental professionals say fluoride is important for developing teeth of children and can generally reduce cavities and tooth decay. Opponents contend putting fluoride in the water supply can be harmful to health.
