Newport began adding fluoride to their water in 1962. But in 2005 an administrative decision stopped the practice because of safety concerns about the method being used. The resolution to add fluoride to water was never repealed by the City Council.
Julia Young-Lorion with Lincoln County Health and Human Services spoke in favor of fluoridation at a September hearing.

Young-Lorion: “Dental cavities are prevalent, and we see this early on in children who are getting their first teeth. Fluoride supplementation for children isn’t always offered by their local pediatricians and families don’t know to request it especially if their new parents or don’t speak English.”

At that hearing more people spoke in opposition than in favor. One resident says fluoride is a hazardous material that is harmful to public health.

The city council is seeking written public input until Monday, October 12th.
