The National Toxicology Program (NTP) has decided to downgrade its draft fluoride monograph to a “state of the science” document that will not reach a conclusion on hazards posed by the chemical after the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) criticized the latest draft in a new peer review, the program has confirmed to Inside TSCA.

“The final document will not include hazard conclusions,” an NTP spokesman tells Inside TSCA.

… EPA has already touted the NAS critique of NTP’s second draft monograph on fluoride’s neurotoxicity in a Feb. 22 notice to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California in Food & Water Watch, Inc. (FWW), et al., v. EPA, arguing that the peer review shows that NTP’s report has little bearing on the low fluoride doses found in drinking water.

… EPA also said in the filing that “NTP is no longer expected to reach a conclusion regarding whether neurodevelopmental harm is a hazard of fluoride exposure,” quoting both NAS’ recent report and NTP’s statement on its draft fluoride monograph.

… the American Dental Association (ADA), in a Feb. 11 statement, says NAS’ concerns “mirror” its own and points to the group’s October 2020 comments to the NAS committee in which ADA asked the committee to support its request that NTP “change its classification of fluoride from presumed neurotoxin to no neurotoxic health effect at low levels” because it says the available scientific literature is inconclusive…
