Fluoride
The trustees (excluding John Morley who didn’t attend the meeting) are poised to stop adding fluoride in the municipal water system. Lanou said the federal government recommended in the 1940s that municipal water systems include fluoride.
Scientists advocate in favor of fluoride as it reduces the risk of tooth decay and cavities. According to Popular Science magazine, public health studies believe the practice is safe and promotes good public health. However, the publication acknowledges exposure at high concentration levels is known to impact childhood cognitive development.
Lanou pointed out the presence of fluoride in a number of products, including toothpaste, therefore it isn’t necessary to add it to the municipal water supply. He said sometimes fluoride can be naturally found in water.
Colburn asked whether the state mandates the use of fluoride. Lanou said Barton Village no longer adds fluoride to the water. The village attorney has been asked to research the subject to ensure the trustees can stop adding fluoride.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has set an upper limit of 2 percent fluoride in the water. The trustees tabled the subject until they received a response from the attorney.
