In less than a month we will find out whether Owen Sound will continue to use fluoride in its drinking water.
The Grey Bruce Health Unit’s strategy is simple — educate the candidates and make sure the “pro-fluoride” people vote.
Medical Officer of Health Doctor. Hazel Lynn says the people who are “anti-fluoride” are stuck in their belief and won’t listen to scientific evidence.
An incident in Brampton saw a woman launch a lawsuit against the province of Ontario and Peel Region challenging the safety and benefits of fluoride in municipal drinking water.
Doctor Lynn doubts it will happen here in Owen Sound. She says “that it has happened before and they never win.” However she joked that the “anti-fluoride” people are a “noisy bunch.”
The Grey Bruce Health Unit wants to emphasize the importance of everybody getting the correct information about the additive which can be found at the Grey Bruce Health Unit.
A campaign of posters and information will be available to the public at all candidates meetings in Owen Sound as well as on election day.
The campaign poster reads “Fluoride. It’s Safe and it Works.”
About a month ago, Owen Sound Council passed the motion to use the same question for its plebiscite under the Fluoridation Act.
However the local health unit wanted it changed under the Municipal Act because the wording was confusing to the public.
So the question residents will vote on this fall will be — “Are you in favour of the discontinuation of fluoride in the municipal drinking water?”
