The Pasco City Council is considering removing fluoride from the city’s water supply.

The mineral, which helps prevent cavities and has positive impacts on dental health, has been added to the city’s water supply since 1998. It’s measured in parts-per-million (ppm). One part-per-million is equivalent to approximately one drop out of 10 gallons of water. The city has been adding fluoride to equal levels recommended by the Department of Health, 0.7 ppm.

But fluoride also occurs naturally in our local water at a much smaller amount than the maximum recommendation from the Department of Health, at less than 0.2 ppm. The city would not be removing the naturally occurring fluoride from the water.

Now, the city is asking for community input before they make a final decision on whether or not they will stop adding fluoride to the water. You can share your thoughts online by clicking here, or by attending feedback sessions on August 5 & September 17. Both meetings will start at 6 p.m. at the Pasco City Council Chambers.
