PORT ANGELES — A group of residents concerned about city leaders’ approval of fluoridating city water gathers Tuesday to inform others of the chemical additive.

“We going ahead with this meeting to gather people in Port Angeles that are concerned about fluoride. . . . let them know that it may have detrimental effects,” said Sharon Ford, secretary of the group Clallam County Citizens for Safe Drinking Water.

The meeting begins at 7 p.m. in the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St.

Ford said the group, which now numbers nearly 70 members, was formed in February, around the time that the Port Angeles City Council approved fluoridation of the city’s water system.

Upon learning that the Sequim City Council was looking at following Port Angeles’ lead, group members went door to door to lobby against fluoridation.

The Sequim council eventually rejected fluoridation in a 5-1 vote, based on a survey that Ford said her group influenced.
