OROVILLE, Calif. – Residents in Oroville are still consuming fluoride in their tap water even though the City Council voted against it. The ongoing situation stems from a state requirement established in the 1950s.
Back in May of 2024, City Councilors informed Cal Water of their desire to lift this requirement. Cal Water requested the California Public Utilities Commission remove the mandate last Fall, leading to public hearings.
However, the state has called for more public involvement, resulting in another round of scheduled hearings.
Mayor Dave Pittman addressed concerns about fluoride’s impact on health.
“There’s a lot of health discussion about what it does and the length of fluoride exposure and the the quantity of fluoride. So all those need to be met, but the common denominator here is fluoride just is not a good item for your body,” Pittman said. “It has no unquestioned ability to help with dental health and teeth. That’s unquestioned. But ingesting it to your body, just opens up a lot more problems.”
Two public participation hearings are scheduled for Sept. 23 at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. at the Oroville City Council Chambers. Residents should expect to receive an invitation in the mail soon.
