JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Mississippi Public Service Commissioner De’Keither Stamps announced the introduction of a resolution recommending that local water systems across the state review the continued use of synthetic sodium fluoride additives in drinking water and consider removal where appropriate.
The resolution also urged the state to enact legislation prohibiting the addition of synthetic sodium fluoride to public drinking water systems. It also encouraged a statewide reassessment of fluoridation practices.
Stamps said the intent of the resolution is to strengthen public transparency, address cost pressures on water systems, and ensure Mississippi’s approach reflects modern public expectations and best practices.
“Mississippians deserve to know what is being added to their drinking water and why,” said Stamps. “This resolution is rooted in transparency, safety, and affordability. We want to help water systems reduce avoidable chemical costs while ensuring families have confidence in the quality of the water coming into their homes.”
He said there are ongoing challenges facing water systems throughout Mississippi, including rising operational costs, aging infrastructure demands and the need for long-term sustainability, especially in rural and underserved communities.
This comes after State Rep. Bryant Clark (D-District 47) filed a bill related to fluoridation policy.
“Clean water is fundamental, and the public deserves the highest standard of accountability when it comes to what goes into the water supply,” said Clark. “I introduced legislation on this issue because communities across Mississippi are asking important questions about safety, cost, and the role of government in protecting public trust. This resolution reflects the seriousness of that concern.”
Stamps said the resolution supports collaboration between public agencies, water operators and health leadership to ensure that any policy changes are handled responsibly and communicated clearly to the public.
