ROCKPORT — A total of 14 potential articles are listed on the town’s fall Town Meeting warrant, and the Board of Selectmen is set to sort them out during a meeting tonight.

… As for the fluoride-related article, members of the Cape Ann Fluoride Action Network hope to have the substance removed from town water due to health concerns.

However, an affirmative vote on Town Meeting floor doesn’t mean fluoride will be removed from the water; it would simply authorize the selectmen to put a question on the next town election ballot, according to an opinion from Kopelman and Paige P.C., the town’s legal counsel. Towns are not allowed to put a binding petitioners’ question on a Town Meeting warrant, the opinion adds.

This question, according to what’s allowed under state law, would read “Are you in favor of discontinuing the fluoride supplementation of the Rockport Water Supply?”

… The selectmen are scheduled to meet at 7 tonight in Conference Room A of the Town Hall.
