As Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has advocated for the removal of fluoride from water, he has framed it as an issue of medical freedom.

“We shouldn’t be demanding that parents accept something for their children and in their homes that is essentially a medication. They can go to the drugstore and they can get toothpaste, if you want to apply it in your home you can,” the nation’s health secretary said at a press conference in April following Utah’s announcement that it would be the first state to institute a ban on fluoridated water. “I think it’s a moral imperative that we all believe in freedom of choice in this country.”

Now, the Food and Drug Administration he oversees is weighing removing oral fluoride supplements from the market, a decision that critics say would restrict parents’ freedom of choice.
