SANDY, Utah) – Sandy City has lifted the No Drink Order on the rest of the city potentially affected by high metal content in the water. The No Drink Order is lifted for the area between 1700 East and 2000 East and 10600 South and 11400 South.
According to a press release, the area affected about 600 homes. All levels of metals have returned to safe drinking levels.
One sample from a home however tested higher than normal for lead. Samples from the homes on either side tested in safe drinking levels. The homeowner will be contacted directly and the home’s plumbing system will be further investigated by Sandy City.
Call center will not be available Sunday but residents can call 801-355-4122 tomorrow from 9-5 pm.
Volunteers are requested to meet at Sandy City Hall to assist in sample collection tomorrow at 8 am.

- At the 10600 South 1300 East parking lot you can get bottled water and water for livestock.
- At the Public Utilities building at 9150 South 150 East you can get bottle water.

(SANDY, Utah) February 16, 2019 – Last week, due to a storm and resultant power outage, a fluoride pump malfunctioned at one of Sandy City’s wells near the intersection of 1700 East and 11170 South. Higher levels of fluoride entered the water system impacting approximately 50 homes. Due to the corrosive potential of the fluoride chemical at high levels the acidic condition of the water during this time resulted in corrosion of home plumbing and interior pipe scale deposits.
Results of limited water samples taken on February 7 revealed elevated levels of manganese, aluminum, iron and arsenic in addition to the previous known high levels of fluoride, lead and copper. However, results of samples taken on February 15 showed these all metals except for lead had already returned to safe drinking levels. The lead results are above the action level but have decreased significantly since last test.
Sandy City issued a no drink order early Saturday morning and instructed residents in the affected area of 700 East to 2000 East and 10600 South to 11400 South to completely flush their hot and cold taps for 30 minutes. Health Effects:
- Health effects from short-term arsenic exposure include vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and possible numbness of the extremities.
- The EPA has not established a National Primary Drinking Water Regulation for manganese so no action is required by Federal regulation. However, this result exceeds EPA’s 10-day Health Advisory value for infants younger than 6 months (300 µg/L). Therefore, near-term actions to address public health concerns, particularly for formula-fed infants may be warranted. This result also exceeds EPA’s chronic (lifetime) Health Advisory value (300 µg/L).
