SANTA FE, N.M. — The City of Santa Fe won’t require the addition of fluoride to its drinking water after the mayor signed an ordinance into law ending the practice.
Fluoride is a natural compound linked to improved dental health. Jennifer Thompson, the chair of the New Mexico Board of Dental Health, stated the Board doesn’t support the city’s decision.
“Without this proven public health measure, Santa Fe can expect more cavities, more missed school and workdays, more emergency dental visits and higher health care spending,” Thompson stated.
City officials say the water already has some fluoride. The city will continue to monitor fluoride levels under the law.
Mayor Alan Webber signed the ordinance into law Oct. 15. Councilors Carol Romero-Wirth and Jamie Cassutt introduced the ordinance, passed by city councilors Oct. 8. Here’s the full text:
