On the 60th anniversary of community water fluoridation in the U.S., Springmill Products, Inc. (SPI), maker of PetRefresh®, joins others calling for a serious review of the water fluoridation program in the U.S. to investigate studies that point to a causal relationship between fluoridated water and dental/skeletal fluorosis, cancer, osteoporosis, decreased sperm counts, hypothyroidism, early onset of puberty, and a lowering of IQs in children. Explains Bill Fels, company founder: “We (SPI) are not qualified to say where there’s smoke there’s fire. What we are saying is where there is this much smoke, shouldn’t someone be checking to see if something is burning?”

Lawsonville, (PRWEB) July 7, 2005 — On the 60th anniversary of water fluoridation in the U.S., the American Dental Association (ADA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are celebrating in Chicago July 13–16. Springmill Products, Inc. (SPI), bottler of PetRefresh®, joins others in calling for a serious review of water fluoridation.

SPI’s concern for pets and humans stems from numerous studies that point to a relationship between fluoridated water and dental/skeletal fluorosis, cancer, osteoporosis, decreased sperm counts, hypothyroidism, early onset of puberty, and a lowering of IQs in children.

“As a company committed to animal health and as people who’ve been exposed to fluoridated water, SPI is concerned about the suggested risks to animals and people from fluoridated water,” explains Bill Fels, company founder. “Where there’s this much smoke, shouldn’t someone check for fire? All we are asking is that the issue be examined and resolved by a credible, independent group.”

Fels notes the EPA’s union representing its scientists, lawyers, engineers and other professional employees has publicly announced its opposition to water fluoridation.

The largest survey ever conducted in the US (more than 39,000 children from 84 communities) by the National Institute of Dental Research showed little difference in tooth decay among children in fluoridated and non-fluoridated communities (Hileman 1989). The difference was less than one tooth surface of the 128 surfaces in a child’s mouth.

In addition, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC 1999, 2001) has now acknowledged the findings of many leading dental researchers that the mechanism of fluoride‘s benefits are mainly TOPICAL (direct fluoride application) not SYSTEMIC (where it is ingested).

A Harvard School of Dental Health study found increased bone cancer (osteosarcoma) in boys who had been exposed to fluoridated water between the ages of five and 10. The study was conducted using levels of fluoride ingested regularly by Americans. (Boston Herald, June 2005).

Robert Carton, Ph.D., a former U.S. EPA scientist, called fluoridation “the greatest case of scientific fraud of this century.” At least 14 Nobel Prize winning scientists have expressed their reservations about the practice of fluoridation.

Dr. Michael W. Fox- Ph.D., B. Vet. Med., and Syndicated “Animal Doctor” Columnist, notes that “Compounding health-hazards of water-treatment of already contaminated water is the addition of fluoride, a byproduct of the phosphate fertilizer industry, ostensibly to strengthen peoples’ teeth…Studies have shown no benefit from ingested fluoride.’

“On the contrary, in animals and humans, fluoride can mottle the teeth and cause a host of health problems, notably osteoporosis, arthritis, kidney disease, and hypothyroidism. Fluoride has also been linked with gastrointestinal ailments, allergic skin reactions, impaired cognitive ability in children, harm to the pineal gland that helps regulate the onset of puberty, and possibly cause cancer.”

SPI conducted interviews and used information from 50 Reasons to Oppose Fluoride, written by Dr. Paul Connett, to compile information for this release. Additional comments and a more extensive list of studies can be found at www.petrefresh.com/about.htm in the Press Release section.
