The Hogenakkal Water Supply & Fluorosis Mitigation Project, funded by the Japan Bank for International Cooperation, seeks to provide potable water to Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts, which are drought-prone and have recorded fluoride content above the permissible level in groundwater.

The population is also affected by dental, skeletal and non-skeletal fluorosis.

The scheme was inaugurated in May 2013 and at present, supplies an average of 120 million litres of water from Tamil Nadu’s share of the Cauvery to three municipalities, 16 town panchayats and as many as 7,639 rural habitations in the two districts.
