Nalgonda – The indefinite fast undertaken by local MLA Komatireddi Venkat Reddy and Municipal chairman Pullemla Venkatanarayana Goud for achievement of fluoride-free water to the district, entered fourth day on Monday.
The government doctors, who were examining the fasting leaders every hour, said their condition was deteriorating.
With the condition of the fasting leaders deteriorating, the fast camp has virtually turned into a sea of humanity as Congress workers and people in large numbers from various parts of the district thronged the place and pledged their solidarity with them.
Relay fasts, rasta-rokos and dharnas in various parts of the district picked up momentum. Munugode ZPTC member M Chandrakala joined the fasting leaders two days ago.
Students from private and government educational institutions marched to the fast camp and pledged their support to the fasting Congress leaders. They also participated in rasta-roko paralysing vehicular traffic. Congress MLAs Indrakaran Reddy, D Gopal, Gurunath Reddy, Ratnakar Rao, Krishna Reddy, Janga Krishnamurthy and others from Hyderabad called on the fasting leaders.
District Collector Ramprakash Sisodia, Joint Collector Purushotham Reddy also visited the hunger-strike camp and assured the leaders that they would bring their demands to the government’s notice.
Talking to newsmen on Monday, Komatireddi Venkat Reddy made it clear that he would not give up fast-unto-death till his demands which include Krishna waters for 604 fluoride-hit villages, specific assurance on laying second pipeline to the district headquarter town, withdrawal of GO No 70 on diversion of Krishna water to the twin cities from Akkampalli Balancing Reservoir, are met.
He also warned that the State government would alone be held responsible for the consequences if it failed to solve the problem.
Meanwhile, the police made elaborate bandobust at the fasting camp. The Town Congress organised a rasta-roko at Pedda Gadiyaram centre on Monday. Vehicular traffic remained paralysed for over an hour. The police had to divert the traffic from nearby lanes and bylanes.
The protesters raised slogans against the State government and Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu.
