TOWN OF SHELBY, Wis. (WKBT) — The Town of Shelby could remove fluoride from its municipal water.
The town’s Sanitary District Commission held a public comment session Thursday, where community members and health experts weighed in.
Resident and local orthodontist John Patterson said fluoride additive in water can be controversial topic.
“It does reduce cavities and it does pay off later in life because the person is not going to have as much dental problems and disease, but it’s also forced medication which is the other thing,” Patterson Said.
The CDC recommends 0.7 milligrams of fluoride per liter of water to help prevent cavities. According to a letter shared with residents, natural fluoride levels in wells sit between 0.1 and 0.3.
The commission did not vote on the matter at Thursday’s meeting.
