Re: Councillor wants residents educated about fluoridation — Sept. 25
In this article, Waterloo Coun. Angela Vieth was quoted as saying, “There is no evidence that proves (water fluoridation is) safe or that fluoride works.’’ While I applaud the councillor for requesting public information meetings about the issue, I would be remiss in not pointing out how incorrect her statement is.
More than 60 years of independent, respected scientific research from around the world has shown time and time again that water fluoridation, in the correct amount, is both safe and effective. At the Ontario Dental Association we have studied and analyzed the reports, and as president I can quote chapter and verse from these extensive works and would be more than happy to relay their findings.
There are thousands and thousands of pages of information that we, as trained experts, understand how to correctly interpret. That is why the dental association joins with every major medical, dental and health organization around the world, as well as respected bodies such as the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and the United Nations, in supporting water fluoridation.
The Ontario Dental Association would be happy to take part in any public information meeting held on water fluoridation in Waterloo.
Coun. Vieth says, “Ultimately the people will vote and they will decide.” I agree, but let’s give them all the facts before they make the decision.
We look forward to the invitation. Until then, you can visit our website at www.youroralhealth.ca for more information.
