CHAMBERSBURG – On Thursday night at 7 p.m. in Council Chambers at 100 South Second Street in Chambersburg a public meeting will be held to talk about fluoride in the water.
For years, the borough has added fluoride to the water in Chambersburg, but supply issues have reared their ugly head with this topic.
There are different types of fluoride and the one the borough uses is the liquid form.
That’s the one that’s probably hardest to get right now, according to Council Member Austin Rosenbaum.
The powder form is available, but using that would mean a total upgrade to the system and the equipment – and that could be costly.
The meeting is open to the public and facts and discussion will be presented.
Attorney Clint Barkdoll said, “There are things happening around the country right now with fluoride in water. People kind of were skeptical of the critics, saying that these were conspiracy theories. Well, that’s starting to turn the other way now. There’s actually a federal court in Florida that has issued an opinion, and that’s probably going to come into this Chambersburg discussion at some point.”
A judge in the Florida case is asking some questions about the benefits of fluoride.
Barkdoll said, “We know fluoride is good for your dental health. It’s in toothpaste and rinses. But is it too much of a good thing when it’s in the public water system? There’s a lot of debate about this. The proponents are going to say the benefits far outweigh the consequences. And as far as I know, other than Chambersburg, all of our other local public water systems do have fluoride in their water, and they’ve had it in their water for many, many decades. And I’m not aware of any discussion to get rid of it. So that’s why a lot of people will be following this closely to see what happens.”
