Between 600 and 700 employees were evacuated from an oil refinery in Woods Cross on Friday afternoon when hydrofluoric acid began leaking from a broken pipe.

No injuries were reported and employees of Holly Corp. were able to suppress the acid vapour quickly, said South Davis Metro Fire Department Chief Jim Ramptom. The leak occurred about 4:45 p.m.

It was unknown how much acid leaked. Crews working near the area were evaluated by emergency personnel and released.

The refinery, which processes approximately 26,000 barrels of crude oil a day, produces around 15 percent of the State’s gasoline.
