CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A bill introduced in the West Virginia House of Delegates would prohibit fluoride from being added to public drinking water systems across the state.

House Bill 4669, introduced during the 2026 Regular Legislative Session, would create the Safe Drinking Water Act, barring water systems from adding fluoride or fluoride-based compounds to public water supplies.

Under the proposal, public water systems would be prohibited from adding commonly used fluoridation chemicals, including fluorosilicic acid, sodium fluorosilicate, and sodium fluoride. The bill would also prevent cities, counties, or other political subdivisions from passing ordinances that require or allow fluoridation of public water.

Supporters of the legislation say the measure is aimed at protecting public health and giving residents fluoride-free drinking water statewide. Critics are expected to raise concerns about the impact on dental health, particularly for children and low-income communities.

If passed, the law would apply uniformly across West Virginia, eliminating local authority to mandate fluoridation.

House Bill 4669 has been referred to the House Committee on Health and Human Resources for further consideration.
