In previous publications, cases of incipient fluorine 1) poisoning from drinking artificially fluoridated water at the 1 ppm concentration were reported. A specific disease pattern could be discerned closely tallying with what has b??n observed in industrial poisoning from fluorine intake at higher levels.
There are three groups of symptoms:
1. Those due to irritation of the organs involved in ingestion and elimination of fluorides, namely, mucous membranes of mouth, stomach, bowels and urinary tract.
2. Those due to interference of fluorine with normal utilization . of calcium. Deposition of bone substance in joints, ligaments and muscular assertions, periosteal thickening, brittle and breakable nails, sclerosis of bones, especially of pelvis and lower spine ensue. The osteosclerosis may subsequently be followed by softening.
3. The effect on every single cell due to the interference of fluorine with the action of enzymes, especially those involved in cellular oxidation. The most vulnerable cells in :the system are those of the brain and the retina: eye symptoms, partial palsy of arms and legs, extreme mental sluggishness and headaches were noted.
The data to be presented here points to the widespread incidence of this disease· in fluoride areas. It also indicates that certain heretofore unexplained conditions, such as certain forms of stomatitis, gastritis, colitis, lower urinary tract disease, rheumatoid arthritis might conceivably be linked with this disease. Trace quantities of fluorides are naturally present in many waters and foods.
Before reporting these observations, certain facts concerning the chemical and physiological properties of fluorine must be reviewed.
