Fluoride and the Thyroid Gland
EDITORIAL: In 1854 Maument (1) administered to a dog from 20 to 120 mg sodium fluoride daily for four months. He observed an enlargement of the neck which he interpreted as a goiter. Ever since then conflicting data concerning the action of fluoride on the thyroid gland have appeared in the medical literature. In the […]

Is fluoride-induced hyperthyroidism a cause of psychosis among East African immigrants to Scandinavia?
Background of the hypothesis Asylum seekers and immigrants in Scandinavia are admitted to mental hospitals for psychotic disorders up to ten times more frequently than native Scandinavians [1], [2] and [3]. The high frequency of psychosis among immigrants is usually explained as a result of traumatic experiences in their countries of origin, problems with adapting […]

Effect of excess fluoride ingestion on human thyroid function in Gaya region, Bihar, India.
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The mean F concentration in groundwater, F exposure dose, mean F level in the serum and urine of study subjects are shown in Table 1. For a given concentration of F in groundwater, the exposure dose for children was more than that of adults. Although the study subjects of control area consumed […]

Effects of chronic fluorosis on thyroxine, triiodothyronine, and protein-bound iodine in cows
In this study, the serum levels of thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3), and protein-bound iodine (PBI) in the control cows were in the normal range of healthy cows, but they were significantly lower (p<0.05) in the fluorotic cows. These findings are consistent with the results of research with sheep, calves, cattle, and rats. . . . On the other hand, Choubisa reported that none […]

Functional state of thyroid under extended exposure to fluorides
The issue of specific effect of fluorine on the thyroid in humans remains debatable. There is no doubt, however, that cases of experimental fluorosis are characterized by specific toxicity of fluorine to the thyroid. The hypoactivity of thyroid epithelium is observed, the destructive changes in the follicular cells increasing with the increased intoxication time (1, […]

The specific features of the development of iodine deficiencies in children living under environmental pollution with fluorine compounds.
Characteristics of the development of iodine-deficient states in children growing up in conditions of contamination of the surrounding environment with fluoride compounds. It is known that in the presence of insufficient function of the thyroid gland a whole spectrum of pathologic conditions develops known at the present time as “iodine-deficiency diseases.” The most prevalent manifestations […]

Effects of fluorosis on QT dispersion, heart rate variability and echocardiographic parameters in children – Original Investigation
… We found statistically significant low T4 levels, hypocalcemia and hyponatremia, increased QT and QTc interval in children with dental fluorosis. Our results show that fluorosis might increase risk of arrhythmia indirectly, due to its hypocalcemic, hypernatremic, and hypothyroidism effects… Further studies concerning cardiovascular effect of fluorosis in both adults and children are needed.
