WESTMINSTER, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – Westminster City Council passed a resolution Tuesday evening to change the city’s water treatment process.

According to officials, the removal of fluoride from the city’s water treatment process was first introduced on Aug. 12. A public hearing was held during Tuesday’s city council meeting.

By removing fluoride from the water, city officials aim to minimize the introduction of unnecessary or non-essential chemicals and forgo the financial costs and operational risks of purchasing and handling fluoride for the Westminster’s Utilities Department.

According to the resolution, the removal of fluoride from the water treatment process was made effective immediately.

Officials said that city staff will implement the change in a manner that is “safe, efficient and operationally feasible” and provide timely notice to agencies, such as the South Carolina Department of Environmental Services (SC DES), to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations.

While the addition of fluoride to drinking water is not required by state or federal law, the South Carolina Department of Public Health has credited the addition of the natural element with the cost-effective decline in the rates of tooth decay.
