Prevalence and aetiology of juvenile skeletal fluorosis in the south-west of the Hai district, Tanzania–a community-based prevalence and case-control study

Fifty-six cases (34 males, 60.7%) of severe, deforming JSF were identified from the 1263 [691 females (54.7%) 88.0% of the entire village population] that were available for musculoskeletal examination. It is generally agreed that water fluoridation is safe for persons with normal kidneys. Systemic fluorosis in patients with diminished renal function, however, seems a reasonable possibility. In such patients, fluoride may be retained with resulting higher tissue fluoride levels than in persons with normal renal function.
