Studies of relationships between the polymorphism of COMT gene and plasma proteomic profiling and children’s intelligence in high fluoride areas

Fluoride (F) widely exists in environment with a significant increase in body burden accumulation in recent years. Internal exposure to F due to diet including food, water, fluoride-containing dental products like toothpaste and fluoride supplements, is extensively researched. Additionally, industrial pollution and coal burning have also been reported to be major sources of internal F exposure, especially in China. It is known that excessive fluoride intake over a long period of time may resu

Fluorine in the aetiology of endemic goitre

MANY different factors leading to relative or absolute deficiency of iodine may cause changes in the thyroid gland. May (1935) found that the administration of fluorine to rats produced hypoplasia of the thyroid epithelium with altered staining reaction of the colloid. Having experimented with over 800 patients, he advocated internal fluorine therapy in the treatment of toxic goitre. The evidence of alteration in thyroid structure in the experimental production of chronic fluorosis in animals is

Effect of excess fluoride ingestion on human thyroid function in Gaya region, Bihar, India.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The mean F concentration in groundwater, F exposure dose, mean F level in the serum and urine of study subjects are shown in Table 1. For a given concentration of F in groundwater, the exposure dose for children was more than that of adults. Although the study subjects of control area consumed water with F < 1 mg/L, the mean F concentration in serum and urine of controls exceeded the normal upper limit of 0.02 mg/L and 0.1 mg/L respectively (Susheela et al 2005).
