Moms2B Avoid Fluoride During pregnancy Moms know to protect their babies by avoiding smoking, alcohol, medications, raw meat, and seafood (particularly high-mercury fish). We need to add to this list: fluoride in water, food, and drinks. Why add fluoride to the list? While there are 74 IQ studies reporting an association of fluoride exposure with lowered […]

Water fluoridation is the practice of adding industrial-grade fluoride chemicals to water for the purpose of preventing tooth decay. Despite longstanding claims to the contrary, it has become clear that fluoridation is neither necessary nor safe. Most western countries, including 97% of western Europe, have rejected fluoridation, and a growing number of communities in the U.S. and Canada are terminating their fluoridation programs as well.
Do your teeth, or your child’s teeth, have white spots? white streaks? cloudy splotches? brown stains? pitting? If so, you or your child may be among the millions of Americans who now have a condition called dental fluorosis. Fluorosis is a defect of tooth enamel caused by too much fluoride during the first 8 years of life. Although fluorosis was once a rare condition, it now impacts about 40% of children in the United States — visible proof that fluoride exposure has reached unsafe levels in the population.
Many dental products contain dangerously high levels of fluoride. For years, manufacturers and dentists failed to warn consumers about the risks from ingesting these products. Although the FDA now requires manufacturers to warn consumers that fluoride products are poisonous when swallowed, manufacturers and dentists are still using these products in ways that expose consumers and patients to potentially toxic levels of fluoride.
Current fluoride intake among western populations with mass fluoridation programs has reached historically unprecedented levels. While the health impact of these exposures remains poorly understood, research shows that comparable doses cause serious health conditions in areas of the world with widespread fluoride poisoning. Certain individuals, including infants, diabetics, kidney patients, and those with nutrient deficiencies, are at particular risk.
Water fluoridation was launched in the 1940s on the mistaken premise that fluoride needs to be swallowed. As the CDC now acknowledges, fluoride’s main benefit comes from topical application, not ingestion. While fluoridation advocates claim fluoridated water provides an effective form of topical fluoride, current data shows no meaningful difference in tooth decay in areas with, and without, fluoride in the water.
The problem with fluoride today is not under-exposure, but over-exposure. Over the past 60 years, a glut of fluoride products have entered the market, including fluoride toothpastes, fluoride drops/tablets, fluoride mouthrinses, processed foods & beverages, pesticides, commercial tea drinks, fluorinated pharmaceuticals, and teflon pans. Learn the various ways that you can be exposed to fluoride.
Of all age groups, infants are the most vulnerable to fluoride toxicity. Due to their small size, infants receive “approximately three to four times greater exposure (by bodyweight) than do adults” when consuming the same level of fluoride in drinking water. Infants who consume formula made with fluoridated water suffer higher rates of dental fluorosis, and may be at greater risk for other consequences, including damage to the brain and endocrine system.
Current data shows that low-income and minority communities are disproportionately harmed by water fluoridation programs. Fluoridation has thus become an issue of environmental justice, with a growing number of civil rights leaders calling for an end to the practice.
Fluoride is a major industrial pollutant, one which has caused widespread damage to fluoride-exposed workers and downwind communities. During the Cold War, fluoride was responsible for more litigation against U.S. industry than all other air pollutants combined. Although the development of modern pollution control technology has resulted in significant reductions in fluoride emissions, millions of […]
“The political profluoridation stance has evolved into a dogmatic, authoritarian, essentially antiscientific posture, one that discourages open debate of scientific issues.” – Dr. Edward Groth, Senior Scientist, Consumers Union, 1991.
