CORNING – The city of Corning Monday will consider backing out of a tentative plan to add fluoride to the municipality’s water supply.

Betty Coccho, D-6th Ward, said supporters of fluoridation have failed to raise the $100,000 in grant money required by the plan adopted last November.

“The mayor suggested that we address the issue again in six months,” Coccho said. “The six months is up, I have met with Dr. (Thomas) Curran and he’s $35,000 short.”

Curran, a retired oral surgeon, headed the effort to raise $100,000 to defray about half of the city’s start-up fluoridation costs.

Both Coccho and Councilman Rich Negri, R-3rd Ward, are sponsoring the resolution to withdraw from the fluoridation plan. It will be considered at Monday’s Corning City Council meeting at 7 p.m. at Corning City Hall.
