Adding fluoride to drinking water across Scotland would save the NHS “a fortune” by preventing tooth decay, dental professionals have said after Glasgow announced that it would consider introducing the mineral.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde has agreed to examine the possibility of augmenting water supplies, which are used by more than 1.2 million people.

Last month Sajid Javid, the Westminster health secretary, unveiled plans to expand fluoridation south of the border. The British Dental Association (BDA) wants Holyrood to follow England.

Fluoride is routinely added to drinking supplies in countries including Ireland, the US, Canada and Australia.

Robert Donald, chairman of the BDA’s Scottish council, urged ministers to take heed of evidence that showed fluoride was an effective intervention.
