Abstract
A study on the serum T4, T3, and TSH levels was performed in 27 patients with chronic skeletal fluorosis and the data obtained were compared with those of 20 healthy persons. The results showed that serum T4 in the patients was lower than in the controls and TSH was higher. While serum T3 showed no significant difference. There was no goiter found in the patients. These data indicate that fluorine may reduce serum T4 by interfering [with] the thyroid function. The increase of TSH secretion is the consequence stimulated by a feedback mechanism but no proliferation and enlargement of the thyroid gland resulted since the reactivity of the thyroid to [a] rise [in] serum TSH stimulation is inhibited by the fluorine.

Effects of protein and calcium supplementation on bone metabolism and thyroid function in protein and calcium deficient rabbits exposed to fluoride
This study was conducted to determine whether feeding a diet containing excess crude protein (CP) or calcium (Ca) for up to 120 days can ameliorate the effects of fluoride (F) intake on bone health and thyroid function observed in rabbits fed a CP- and Ca-deficient diet. Treatment with F increased serum bone Gla

Association of maternal urinary fluoride concentrations during pregnancy with size at birth and the potential mediation effect by maternal thyroid hormones: The Swedish NICE birth cohort.
Highlights Gestational fluoride exposure was associated with increased infant size at birth. Fluoride exposure was linked with increased odds of large for gestational age. Maternal thyroid hormone levels did not explain the observed associations. Background Observational studies have indicated that elevated maternal fluoride exposure during pregnancy may impair child neurodevelopment but

Fluoride exposure and thyroid function among adults living in Canada: Effect modification by iodine status.
Highlights Higher urinary fluoride levels are not associated with higher TSH levels in the general population of adults living in Canada. Iodine status modifies the relationship between urinary fluoride and TSH levels. Adults in Canada who have moderate-to-severe iodine deficiencies and higher urinary fluoride tend to have higher TSH

[Effect of different fluoride and iodine concentration in drinking water on children's dental fluorosis and thyroid function].
Objective: To investigate the effect of different concentrations of fluoride and iodine in drinking water on children's dental fluorosis and thyroid function. Methods: According to different concentration of fluoride and iodine in drinking water, four villages in two counties of Henan province were classified as high fluoride and iodine, high fluoride,

[The change of thyroid functlon from the children with fluoride aluminum combined toxicosis in Shuicheng Area of Guizhou].
The levels of serum T3, T4 and TSH were analyzed in the children with fluoride aluminum combined toxicosis in Shuicheng area of Guizhou as compared with the children without fluoride-aluminum combined toxicosis. The results showed that serum T4 content decreased in the children with fluoride aluminum combined toxicosis (103.9±15.9 nmol/L

Fluoride's Impact on Thyroid Hormones
Up through the 1950s, doctors in Europe and South America prescribed fluoride for this purpose in patients with hyperthyroidism. (Merck Index 1968). Fluoride was selected as a thyroid suppressant based on findings dating back to the mid-19th century that fluoride is a goitrogen (a substance that can cause goiter). When used as

Mikhailets (1996): Functional state of thyroid under extended exposure to fluorides
Abnormalities in the thyroid function characterized by a decreased iodine absorption function of the thyroid, a low level T3 syndrome, and a slight increase of the TSH level are observed in cases of chronic fluorine intoxication in the industrial workers.

Fluoride Exposure Aggravates the Impact of Iodine Deficiency
A consistent body of animal and human research shows that fluoride exposure worsens the impact of an iodine deficiency. Iodine is the basic building block of the T3 and T4 hormones and thus an adequate iodine intake is essential for the proper functioning of the thyroid gland. When iodine intake is inadequate during infancy and

The Relationship Between Fluoride Exposure & Goitre in South Africa
As a general rule simple goitre, irrespective of the cause, can be very, or fairly, satisfactorily combated by an adequate increase in man's daily iodine intake, except when the enlargement of the gland is due to the ingestion of excessive amounts of fluorine. The only correct solution to fluorine-induced endemic goitre is the removal of this element from the drinking water.

Fluoride Aggravates Thyroid Damage Caused by Excess Iodine Intake
Chinese researchers have found that the combination of excess fluoride with excess iodine caused greater reductions in IQ, or greater increases in goitre than either scenario by itself.
