Abstract
Endemic fluorosis is a systematic disease. We investigated the serum free fluoride, thyroid hormones and TSH concentrations in 37 cases. Significantly lowered serum T4 and T3 and increased TSH were found in patients. Patients’ serum rT3 concentrations were not significantly different from the controls. Significant negative correlations were found between serum free fluoride concentrations and T3 concentrations or T3/T4 ratios. We proposed that fluoride intoxication might decrease the thyroid function and suggested the method of prevention and treatment of this condition.

Investigations of soft tissue functions in fluorotic individuals of North Gujurat
The present study was undertaken to investigate the various health problems caused by water-borne fluoride in endemic villages of Mehsana and Banaskantha districts of Gujarat. The study revealed high levels of fluoride in serum samples of the villagers. Mottling of teeth and skeletal complications were common. Intake of fluoride caused

Functional state of thyroid under extended exposure to fluorides
The issue of specific effect of fluorine on the thyroid in humans remains debatable. There is no doubt, however, that cases of experimental fluorosis are characterized by specific toxicity of fluorine to the thyroid. The hypoactivity of thyroid epithelium is observed, the destructive changes in the follicular cells increasing with the

Excess fluoride ingestion and thyroid hormone derangements in children living in Delhi, India
SUMMARY: Ninety children with dental fluorosis, aged 7–18, living in fluoride endemic, non-iodine deficient areas of the National Capital Territory of Delhi, India, where iodized salt has been promoted for over a decade, were investigated, along with 21 children in two control groups without dental fluorosis living in non- endemic

[Joint effects of excessive fluoride and iodine on thyroid function among children in Tianjin].
Objective To investigate the joint effects of excessive fluoride and iodine on thyroid function among children in Tianjin. Methods According to the concentration of fluoride and iodine in drinking water, four small towns in two counties of Tianjin were classified into three groups of high fluoride and iodine, high fluride, and control.Children aged 8-10 years in

Effects of chronic fluorosis on thyroxine, triiodothyronine, and protein-bound iodine in cows
This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of chronic fluorosis in cows on their blood serum levels of thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3), and protein-bound iodine (PBI). Data collected from twenty cows with chronic fluorosis in the Tendurek Mountain region (altitude about 2000 m) in East Anatolia, Turkey, were compared

Fluoride's Impact on Thyroid Hormones
Up through the 1950s, doctors in Europe and South America prescribed fluoride for this purpose in patients with hyperthyroidism. (Merck Index 1968). Fluoride was selected as a thyroid suppressant based on findings dating back to the mid-19th century that fluoride is a goitrogen (a substance that can cause goiter). When used as

Mikhailets (1996): Functional state of thyroid under extended exposure to fluorides
Abnormalities in the thyroid function characterized by a decreased iodine absorption function of the thyroid, a low level T3 syndrome, and a slight increase of the TSH level are observed in cases of chronic fluorine intoxication in the industrial workers.

Fluorine in the Aetiology of Endemic Goitre
The distribution of endemic goitre in the Punjab and in England is related to the geological distribution of fluorine and to the distribution of human dental fluorosis (mottled enamel). Inquiry showed the presence of dental fluorosis among school-children in two areas of Somerset where two previous observers had recorded a high incidence of goitre, and the absence of dental fluorosis in an adjoining area selected as control where endemic goitre was absent.

NRC (2006): Fluoride's Impact on the Thyroid Gland
Several lines of information indicate an effect of fluoride exposure on thyroid function. It is difficult to predict exactly what effects on thyroid function are likely at what concentration of fluoride exposure and under what circumstances.

Fluoride Exposure Aggravates the Impact of Iodine Deficiency
A consistent body of animal and human research shows that fluoride exposure worsens the impact of an iodine deficiency. Iodine is the basic building block of the T3 and T4 hormones and thus an adequate iodine intake is essential for the proper functioning of the thyroid gland. When iodine intake is inadequate during infancy and
