Dear Supporter,
In 1995, the state of California mandated artificial water fluoridation for all towns serving more than 10,000 customers. Over the past 19 years, a steadily growing number of communities have been forced to implement fluoridation despite opposition from residents and local officials. While some communities have been successful in delaying implementation of the mandate by rejecting funding and holding local referendums, state officials and the pro-fluoride lobby have responded with increased pressure and threats of state enforcement. Sonoma County and Davis City are experiencing the full power of this pressure now.
Opposition to fluoridation is strong in California, and there is no shortage of fluoride-free groups throughout the state. But while these groups are working hard to fight the practice locally, there needs to be an effort to unify everyone into a statewide coalition, which is the only way to end the mandate.
With this in mind, Clint Griess of Get the F Out (San Francisco) and the International Fluoride-Free Teleconference, has organized a teleconference focusing exclusively on California. The goal of the 60-minute conference call is to start a statewide conversation amongst fluoride-free public health professionals, scientists, and campaigners. By sharing information and coordinating everyone’s efforts, we can make significant progress towards the goal of a unified state campaign.
