Federal regulators cited Citgo Refining and Chemicals LP in Corpus Christi for allegedly exposing workers to the release of toxic chemicals.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration proposed Citgo pay $236,500 in penalties for allegedly committing workplace violations resulting from a “catastrophic” release of hydrocarbon and hydrofluoric acid from the facility. OSHA began its investigation in July.

The agency alleges Citgo committed six serious safety violations, including failing to maintain floors to prevent falls in the path of an exit and properly labeling electrical equipment. A serious violation is for a hazard that could cause death or physical harm.

The company has 15 business days from receipt of the citations to comply, contest the findings or request an informal conference with OSHA’s area director in Corpus Christi.
