A BRISBANE LNP Member supports the Fraser Coast Mayor’s suggestion that the State Government should have made the final decision on fluoride.

Member for Nudgee Jason Woodforth said he believed it was wrong for the LNP to dump responsibility for the controversial additive’s future on councils.

He said the LNP should have instead mandated fluoride be kept out of water supplies state-wide.

“No, I don’t think it was right,” Mr Woodforth said.

“We should have banned hydrofluorosilicic acid at a state level and made it illegal to import and put into the water.”

Mr Woodforth claimed the previous State Government had used research that was outdated when it decided to make fluoride compulsory.

And he suggested those in support of the additive were without solid data that backed their stance.

Fraser Coast Mayor Gerard O’Connell has postponed making a decision on the region’s fluoride future because of the recent extreme weather events.

“My hope had been yesterday if we had met at the scheduled council meeting, I would have said, ‘Look, I’d like a report with a view to make a decision at the next meeting’,” Cr O’Connell said.

“And look, we might have to buy ourselves a further two weeks now to do that.”
