Abstract
The contents of T3, T4, TSH, urine fluoride, and urine iodine in 8-12 year-old children [were measured] in endemic fluorosis areas (water fluoride 3.52 mg/L). The results are: T4 content significantly decreased in the blood. T3 and TSH content was significantly elevated, and there is a positive correlation between the ratio and urine fluoride content, showing a degree of inhibition of the function of children’s thyroids in endemic fluorosis areas, and this inhibition effect may be caused by the long-term exposure of children in the endemic area to a high-fluoride environment.

[Effects of fluoride on the thyroid morphology and thyroid peroxidase and serum thyroid hormones].
Objective To observe the effects of fluoride on thyroid morphology, thyroid peroxidase and serum thyroid hormones. Methods One - month ablactating SD rats were randomly divided into three groups:the control group, low-fluoride group, middle-fluoride group, high-fluoride group, fed with water containing different fluoride concentration by adding NaF respectively. Rats were sacrificed after

A trial for improving thyroid gland dysfunction in rats by using a marine organism extract.
Understanding the relation between the environmental stress factors and the hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis efficiency can reduce the susceptibility to thyroid diseases. In our study, thyroid dysfunction was induced in female rats by administration of 40 mg Na F/kg.bd.wt/day for a month. Co-administration of the water extract of Arca noae (300 mg/kg.

Effects of sub-acute fluoride exposure on discrete regions of rat brain associated with thyroid dysfunction: a comparative study
Objectives: In this present in vivo study, it is intended to examine the effects of fluoride on metabolic functions of four discrete regions of rat brain associated with thyroidal insufficiency. Background: Fluoride contamination in drinking water is a major health issue. Adverse health effects of fluoride include dental and muscle fluorosis,

Thyroid function, intelligence, and low-moderate fluoride exposure among Chinese school-age children.
Highlights Low-moderate fluoride was related to alterations in childhood thyroid function. Fluoride exposure was associated with a decrease in children’s intelligence. TT3, FT3 were positively related to the odds of developing high normal intelligence. TSH may modify the association of fluoride with children’s intelligence. Background: Thyroid hormones (THs) are critical for

A comparative study of fluoride ingestion levels, serum thyroid hormone & TSH level derangements, dental fluorosis status among school children from endemic and non-endemic fluorosis areas
The study was undertaken to determine serum/urinary fluoride status and comparison of free T4, free T3 and thyroid stimulating hormone levels of 8 to 15 years old children with and without dental fluorosis living in an endemic and non-endemic fluorosis area. A sample group of 60 male and female school children,

Fluoride's Impact on Thyroid Hormones
Up through the 1950s, doctors in Europe and South America prescribed fluoride for this purpose in patients with hyperthyroidism. (Merck Index 1968). Fluoride was selected as a thyroid suppressant based on findings dating back to the mid-19th century that fluoride is a goitrogen (a substance that can cause goiter). When used as

NRC (2006): Fluoride's Impact on the Thyroid Gland
Several lines of information indicate an effect of fluoride exposure on thyroid function. It is difficult to predict exactly what effects on thyroid function are likely at what concentration of fluoride exposure and under what circumstances.

Fluoride Aggravates Thyroid Damage Caused by Excess Iodine Intake
Chinese researchers have found that the combination of excess fluoride with excess iodine caused greater reductions in IQ, or greater increases in goitre than either scenario by itself.

Fluoride & Goiter
Goitre (aka goiter) is an enlargement of the thyroid gland that in some cases can produce visible swelling in the neck. The main cause of goitre is iodine deficiency. Goitre can also be caused by other things, including hypothyroidism and substances that cause goitre (goitrogens). Since as far back as the

Is fluoride-induced hyperthyroidism a cause of psychosis among East African immigrants to Scandinavia?
When people with a compensated fluoride-induced hypothyroidism move to a low-fluoride area, the fluoride-induced inhibition of the production of thyroid hormones ceases. In Scandinavia, the dietary intake of iodine is usually quite high due to iodized table salt and easy access to marine fish. Under these conditions, the elevated capacity for production of thyroid hormones may result in hyperthyroidism.
